Communication in Agriculture

Multi-stakeholder environments require managers to translate strategy and decisions into clear expectations.

Target level: Developing Moving in a positive direction in a professional career. Still learning, with room to grow around the skill.

Why this design

Play the interaction live with a partner, then swap and run it again. Interaction-heavy skills — customer service, escalation, difficult news, handoffs.

What this evidences

  • communication×1 at Developing

By the end, the learner can

  • Producer advisory communication: explains improved feeding, housing, or disease control practices to producers with increasing clarity and responsiveness to questions
  • Interdisciplinary listening: actively listens during cross-functional team discussions on animal biology, chemistry, or food production challenges to synthesize multiple expert perspectives
  • Cross-functional product briefing: conveys food formulation changes and processing parameters to plant operators and engineers using accessible technical language

Session plan

  1. 10 minThe sceneWhere this shows up: farms and forests or natural areas, working with supervisors, crew members, landowners or customers. Conditions to expect: safety-aware, outdoor, physically demanding. Entry roles this maps to: Agricultural Equipment Operators, Agricultural Inspectors, Animal Breeders.
    • reads and interprets pesticide labels, water rights permits, and USDA compliance documents to guide operational decisions
From Farmers, Ranchers, and Other Agricultural Managers (11-9013.00)
  2. 15 minRun itPairs. One plays the supervisors, one plays the Agricultural Equipment Operators. Run the scene for four minutes, then swap. The observer scores against the criteria before anyone discusses it.
    • Tools in play: Spreadsheet software, Office suite software, Data base user interface and query software.
  3. 15 minObserver scores itScored live against the four levels. The scorer marks what they saw, not what they assume the learner could do on a better day. Developing is the target for this point in the program: Moving in a positive direction in a professional career. Still learning, with room to grow around the skill.
  4. 10 minSwap and re-runClose the loop: what changed between the first attempt and the last, and what would have to be true for communication to hold up on a bad day.
