Work readiness · Role-play · 35 min
The first two weeks
Asking for help without looking lost, taking a correction, and finding out what 'done' means here. The skills that decide whether a first job lasts.
Target level: Proficient — Has functional knowledge of the skill and can apply it properly in specific on-the-job settings.
Why this design
Play the interaction live with a partner, then swap and run it again. Interaction-heavy skills — customer service, escalation, difficult news, handoffs.
What this evidences
- communication×1 at Proficient
- mindfulness×0.6 at Proficient
By the end, the learner can
- Scientific proposal writing: authors detailed project proposals for new biofuels products or processes that translate complex chemistry and engineering concepts into actionable business cases
- Interdisciplinary coordination: facilitates technical discussions across chemistry, engineering, and production teams to align understanding of fermentation or distillation process parameters
- Cross-functional briefing: presents detailed cost estimates to architects, owners, and executives using visual aids that translate technical figures into business impact
Session plan
- 5 minThe sceneWhere this shows up: construction sites and outdoor job sites, working with supervisors, crew members, other trades. Conditions to expect: safety-sensitive, physically demanding, variable site conditions. Entry roles this maps to: Boilermakers, Brickmasons and Blockmasons, Carpenters.
- prepares and submits detailed budget estimates and cost-tracking reports to owners and executives with precision and clarity
- 10 minRun itPairs. One plays the supervisors, one plays the Boilermakers. Run the scene for four minutes, then swap. The observer scores against the criteria before anyone discusses it.
- Tools in play: Spreadsheet software, Office suite software, Computer aided design CAD software.
- 10 minObserver scores itScored live against the four levels. The scorer marks what they saw, not what they assume the learner could do on a better day. Proficient is the target for this point in the program: Has functional knowledge of the skill and can apply it properly in specific on-the-job settings.
- 10 minSwap and re-runClose the loop: what changed between the first attempt and the last, and what would have to be true for communication to hold up on a bad day.
