Mindfulness in Arts

Precision and safety expectations require attention to calculations, specifications, testing, and documentation.

Target level: Developing Moving in a positive direction in a professional career. Still learning, with room to grow around the skill.

Why this design

Play the interaction live with a partner, then swap and run it again. Interaction-heavy skills — customer service, escalation, difficult news, handoffs.

What this evidences

  • mindfulness×1 at Developing

By the end, the learner can

  • Meeting presence: maintains engaged and focused participation in cross-functional design reviews, contributing observations rather than passively attending
  • Intentional scope management: consciously evaluates feature requests and design changes against project goals before incorporating them, avoiding reactive scope expansion
  • Empathic user perspective maintenance: sustains deliberate focus on the user's lived experience throughout the design process, resisting organizational pressure to optimize for business metrics alone

Session plan

  1. 10 minThe sceneWhere this shows up: studios and media organizations, working with clients, creative teams, audiences. Conditions to expect: creative, deadline-driven, audience-centered. Entry roles this maps to: Actors, Athletes and Sports Competitors, Disc Jockeys, Except Radio.

From Web and Digital Interface Designers (15-1255.00)
  2. 20 minRun itPairs. One plays the clients, one plays the Actors. Run the scene for four minutes, then swap. The observer scores against the criteria before anyone discusses it.
    • Tools in play: Graphics or photo imaging software, Desktop publishing software, Video creation and editing software.
  3. 15 minObserver scores itScored live against the four levels. The scorer marks what they saw, not what they assume the learner could do on a better day. Developing is the target for this point in the program: Moving in a positive direction in a professional career. Still learning, with room to grow around the skill.
  4. 10 minSwap and re-runClose the loop: what changed between the first attempt and the last, and what would have to be true for mindfulness to hold up on a bad day.
