What Hospitality & Tourism work actually is
Replace the outside picture of this sector with the inside one: who does what, under what conditions, for what pay band, and which doors are actually open at entry.
Why this design
Read a short brief on the sector's real work, then mark what's new to you. Setting, employers, entry roles, and the conditions the work happens under.
What this evidences
- core×1 at Emerging
By the end, the learner can
- Cash and card payment transactions: process accurately under direct supervisor guidance at a café point-of-sale terminal.
- Espresso machine and blending equipment: operate following step-by-step protocols to prepare standard hot and cold beverages during a supervised shift.
- Customer beverage orders: receive and relay verbatim to the preparation team in a fast-casual coffee service environment.
Where the technique itself comes from
This module builds the judgment around the task — the standard it has to meet, what to verify, what to hand off, and where it goes wrong. It does not teach the technique. Learning to transfer a patient safely, disinfect a scope, or run a weld comes from supervised practice and your program's own training, and this assessment measures whether you have it rather than replacing it.
Nobody has attached training for this sector yet. An instructor can add it under the sector's resources, and it will appear here for every participant.
Session plan
- 25 minWhat this sector actually doesWhere this shows up: restaurants and food service facilities, working with supervisors, customers, kitchen staff. Conditions to expect: customer-facing, service-oriented, fast-paced. Entry roles this maps to: Amusement and Recreation Attendants, Baggage Porters and Bellhops, Baristas.
- complete under direct supervisor guidance at a venue admissions booth.
- 15 minWhere you'd fitCompare answers before the debrief. Where the room split is the useful part — the split usually marks a real judgment call rather than a knowledge gap.
- Where did two people read the same situation differently, and what did each notice?
- Which answer would survive a supervisor asking "why did you do it that way?"
- 15 minBaseline checkClose the loop: what changed between the first attempt and the last, and what would have to be true for the work itself to hold up on a bad day.
