Work readiness · Role-play · 35 min
The first two weeks
Asking for help without looking lost, taking a correction, and finding out what 'done' means here. The skills that decide whether a first job lasts.
Target level: Proficient — Has functional knowledge of the skill and can apply it properly in specific on-the-job settings.
Why this design
Play the interaction live with a partner, then swap and run it again. Interaction-heavy skills — customer service, escalation, difficult news, handoffs.
What this evidences
- communication×1 at Proficient
- mindfulness×0.6 at Proficient
By the end, the learner can
- Financial reporting communication: presents budget variances, payroll summaries, and inventory discrepancies to ownership or district management in structured verbal and written reports
- Dispute resolution communication: addresses customer complaints regarding payout errors or rule violations through structured, de-escalating dialogue that preserves patron trust and floor order
- Performance feedback delivery: conveys specific, actionable evaluation feedback to dealers and gaming staff during training and performance reviews
Session plan
- 5 minThe sceneWhere this shows up: restaurants and food service facilities, working with supervisors, customers, kitchen staff. Conditions to expect: customer-facing, service-oriented, fast-paced. Entry roles this maps to: Amusement and Recreation Attendants, Baggage Porters and Bellhops, Baristas.
- coordinates messaging between kitchen, wait staff, and hosting teams during high-volume service periods to minimize order errors and table delays
- 10 minRun itPairs. One plays the supervisors, one plays the Amusement and Recreation Attendants. Run the scene for four minutes, then swap. The observer scores against the criteria before anyone discusses it.
- Tools in play: Spreadsheet software, Office suite software, Electronic mail software.
- 10 minObserver scores itScored live against the four levels. The scorer marks what they saw, not what they assume the learner could do on a better day. Proficient is the target for this point in the program: Has functional knowledge of the skill and can apply it properly in specific on-the-job settings.
- 10 minSwap and re-runClose the loop: what changed between the first attempt and the last, and what would have to be true for communication to hold up on a bad day.
